I recently finished my third Seashore Cowl. The previous versions I gave away (or they were claimed by my mother and sister), but I still wanted one for me. The marshmallow pink/purple colors in Kidsilk Haze and Tosh Merino Light are not what I usually wear but I wanted to knit them when I saw them together. The more obvious choice would have been grey or some dark purple or red color, but I tend to wear grey and black every day so a little purple fluff won't hurt :)

Now we are feeling the spring in the air though we got a sudden snow storm here in Finland. I still love how the days get longer and brighter and it also gives so much more energy after long days in work. That is why it is time to wake up this hibernating blog! I have just added some patterns in the blog, that I published during the winter. Go take a look at Patterns and Free patterns pages!!
I also want to introduce you my newest pattern: Seashore Cowl! I'm really happy about this pattern, it combines merino wool (Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light) and silk-mohair (Rowan Kidsilk Haze) with lace and stockinette stitch stripes. You can find all the information about yarn, needles etc. on Ravelry! And guess what! I'm currently working on the pattern for Seashore Shawl! I've already finished knitting it and it is adorable. Here is the color combination I used:

Yllä olevissa kuvissa on muuten uusin neuleeni, Seashore-kauluri!

Pattern: Kuura Shawl
Size: Approx. 57.1” / 145 cm wingspan along the edge sts, 25.6” / 65 cm from cast on along center sts to bind off.

Yarn weight: Fingering / 4 ply (14 wpi)
Yarn I used: BC Garn Silkbloom Fino (55 % merino, 45 % silk, 218 yds / 200 m 50g) 2 balls of color 14, silver.

Yardage: 436 yds / 400 m

Gauge: 19 sts = 10 cm in Stockinette st after blocking

Needles: US 7/ 4 mm

Other yarns I suggest: Try lighter or heavier weight yarns for different effects, for example Malabrigo Sock, Rowan (Fine) Tweed, Cascade Heritage Silk, Madelinetosh Pashmina...

My first ever triangle shawl pattern: Kuura! That's frost in Finnish. Haven't seen frost for a couple of weeks now and the little snow we had is now melting, but we're still hoping to get a white Christmas!

Anyways, I had to try the lovely silk merino Silkbloom Fino, and knit the shawl with only two balls! The yarn has quite loose twist, but knitting was pleasant nevertheless. Blocking made once again all the difference and the shawl grew quite a bit when blocked wet, as I hoped.

You can use any weight of yarn you want and add or reduce repeats of chart 2 to get the size you want. I bought 3 + 3 skeins of Rowan Fine Tweed (those little doughnuts!) and instantly thought of making a stripy Kuura. I used US 6 needles and alternated the colors by starting a new color on row 25 of chart 2. The stripy shawl took less than 300 yards of both colors and the size was about the same as the silver shawl. You can find the Stripy Kuura project page here.
Koko: n. 145 cm pitkää reunaa pitkin, 65 cm keskisilmukkariviä pitkin.

Langan vahvuus: Fingering

This is my first small collection of accessories: Winter Wheat Collection. Worked with a chunky Peruvian wool yarn and easy-to-memorize cable pattern, these accessories are perfect for the winter. Cascade 128 is a high twist yarn with lovely colors, some of which are heathered and some solid. I chose Harvest orange which is one of my favourite colors of the color chart. I love the stitch definition, and the knit fabric stays in form but is really soft.

The cowl can be worn wrapped around your neck once or twice, and the legwarmers will surely keep your legs warm! The patterns are available both separately and together for a lower price.
The first day the weather got really cold I just had to get a new hat. Autumn Rose is a girly, colorful hat with simple but fun stranded rose pattern and a pompom. The hat is worked with two colors with one color as the base for the pattern and the other as the rose color. The pattern includes directions for making a pompom, but there's no need to add it if you think the hat has enough spirit without it :) I added a few color combinations that I love below the post, but I look forward to seeing which colors you would choose!
Ohuemmalla langalla palmikosta tulee kapeampi.
My best friend had her birthday last week and I made this cowl for her. The lace pattern is really beautiful and easy to memorize. I bought the yarn in the summer when I was on a quick spa weekend in Tallinn. I've never knit camel before. It was nice and soft and the stitch definition was good (there was a tiny bit of splitting). This was a quick mindless knit and I'm making one for me some day! Then I will have more time to take proper photos with a smily face :)

Sitten on ehkä enemmän aikaa ottaa hymykuvia :)

My first ever Mystery KAL is now finished and here's the finished project. I usually don't do Mystery patterns, because I want to be sure of the colour placement etc. but I had faith in Stephen and took a chance. I expected a unisex shawl and chose colours that would suit both me and my boyfriend. I luckily got the colours right on the first try and the knitting was very much fun the whole month.

I've never done intarsia, and stranded knitting is not my strength either, so this was a great training sample.

The yarn was really soft merino wool. I'ts really affordable and I was positively surprised of how much a pleasure it was to knit with the yarn. The shawl looked great already before blocking. I'm planning on knitting a hat with the same colour combo.

If I knit the shawl again, I would choose different, toned down shades of the same colour. All in all, I'm really happy with the shawl and colours. I think we have to take turns in wearing the shawl since we both like it so much.

These socks look like long stockings falling down. I wanted a pair of ankle socks that I could wear with my skinny jeans and skirts that just don't work with knee high socks. I will definitely make a pair with one sock with knee high cuff and one with the folded cuff!
Miljahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13279231974867400464noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-973830244786304761.post-87891456358539678012011-08-17T11:59:00.000+03:002011-08-17T11:59:05.827+03:00first postHi there. After many years of reading blogs I decided I want a blog of my own. In Starling Knits and Crafts I write about things woolly, soft and colourful - mostly about knitting but also about other handcrafts. I will write both in English and in Finnish to see what works best.

Moi!
